A discovery made by a kung fu obsessed American teen sends him on an adventure to China, where he joins up with a band of martial arts warriors in order to free the imprisoned Monkey King.

At first glance “Forbidden Kingdom,” the first movie to unite the martial arts action stars Jackie XviDChan and Jet Li, might be mistaken for a pastiche of its genre. Its main character, a Boston teenager named Jason , is obsessed with kung fu cinema, and the ways of modern Hollywood might lead you to expect the filmmakers to mock, travesty or wink at this obsession. Instead they — the screenwriter John Fusco and the director Rob Minkoff — clearly share it. And though it is an English-language film (albeit a heavily accented one), “Forbidden Kingdom” is a faithful and disarmingly earnest attempt to honor some venerable and popular Chinese cinematic traditions. These include a plot that is at times so convoluted as to teeter on the brink of incomprehensibility, a heavy brocade of martial honor and blurry mysticism, and above all a lot of wildly inventive fighting.

Do Islamic terrorists pervert and blaspheme a fundamentally tolerant religion, as continually asserted by Western politicians? The makers of Islam: What the West Needs to Know, a documentary recently released on DVD after a very limited theatrical release, argues that Islam not only excuses but mandates intolerance and violence against "non-believers" for the benefit of spreading the faith. It's a very provocative thesis that the filmmakers, unfortunately, present in a dry, pedestrian manner.

Islam: What the West Needs to Know consists almost entirely of filmed interviews with five writers – Abdullah al-Araby, Walid Shoebat, Robert Spencer (who maintains the popular Jihad Watch weblog), Serge Trifkovic, and Bat Ye’or - who respond to the most common arguments in favor of the Muslim faith being peaceful and tolerant. They argue that several verses in the Koran and the hadiths (contemporary accounts of the Prophet Mohammed’s life) openly encourage the killing and submission of non-Muslims, and that verses allegedly showing the peaceful nature of Islam are superseded by later passages, or include major loopholes.

Six years after 9/11, the spectacular destruction of Manhattan is once again the premise of a Hollywood fantasy, though ‘Cloverfield’ is not your father’s disaster movie. Unaccountable trauma takes the place of scientific rationalisation; partial experience replaces the view from the war room; and the signifiers of the World Trade Center – fireballs, collapsing towers, dust clouds and drifting paper – are everywhere.

Whether you find it all cathartic or exploitative is probably a matter of taste. Following Steven Spielberg’s ‘War of the Worlds’ in presenting an ignorant, panicked, individuated response to armageddon, ‘Cloverfield’ takes that film’s single shot of fantastic carnage captured on a home video camera as its whole aesthetic.

Summary: The film follows D'Leh (Steven Strait), a young mammoth hunter from the Yagahl tribe during the Mesolithic period. It is shown first that, when D'Leh was young, two events happened. First, the mysterious arrival of Evolet (Camilla Belle), a young girl with bright blue eyes who prompts a prophecy from the wise old woman of the tribe, Old Mother (Mona Hammond). Second, the departure of D'Leh's father who leaves to look for new ways to bring sustenance to the tribe. D'Leh falls in love with Evolet and promises that she will always be in his heart.
Several years later, the Yagahl tribe is expecting the arrival of a mammoth herd to help them survive the winter. According to Tic'Tic (Cliff Curtis), D'Leh's mentor and a friend of D'Leh's father, whoever kills the lead male of the herd, will inherit the legendary White Spear of the North, and Evolet as well. There is a rivalry between D'Leh and Ka'Ren, who also wants to be the leader of the tribe.

When the mammoth herd arrives, the hunters try to capture the biggest one, but it manages to escape. D'Leh is the only one that follows him and the mammoth ends up dead when it accidentally falls on top of D'Leh's spear. Since nobody sees this, other than Tic'Tic, D'Leh is assumed to be the leader and the winner of Evolet's love. However, Tic'Tic is reluctant to recognize D'Leh. Being honest to what happened, D'Leh returns the White Spear.
That same night, a mysterious tribe attacks the village and some of them are kidnapped, including Evolet. D'Leh, being away at the time of the attack, is spared. He decides to rescue his love, together with Tic'Tic, Ka'Ren, and young Baku, whose mother was killed during the attack. During their journey, they are attacked by terror birds while entering a forest. Upon finding the rival tribe, Ka'Ren and Baku end up captured too. At one point, D'Leh falls on a trap-hole where he finds a saber-toothed tiger also trapped. Despite being scared, D'Leh ends up saving the tiger and letting him free.
D'Leh and Tic'Tic keep on walking through the desert finding the Naku tribe. Just when they are about to attack them, the saber-toothed tiger appears, but D'Leh confronts it. Recognizing him as the one that saved it earlier, the tiger spares him and protects him from the tribe. The tribe then acknowledges D'Leh as the fulfiller of a prophecy that someone who spoke with the tiger would help them. D'Leh also learns the fate of his father when it is revealed by Nakudu, leader of the Naku, that he had met him.
Joining with other fellow tribes of the area, D'Leh leads them to the altars where the kidnappers are taking Evolet and the others. Some mysterious figure is forcing the prisoners to build altars and pyramids for them. Convinced to rescue Evolet, D'Leh and his friends lead an attack on the pyramids and ends up killing the mysterious god-like figure. After freeing Evolet from the leader of the kidnappers, she is shot from behind with an arrow. However, she comes back to life to fulfill the prophecy of Old Mother.
D'Leh and the rest of the Yagahl say goodbye to the Naku and return to their village. The film ends up with D'Leh and Evolet seeing how the seeds that Nakudu gave them are growing, marking the birth of agriculture.

A poor Chinese laborer learns important lessons after his son gets a strange new toy.

Stephen Chow is a single father with a boy, and he works hard as a construction worker to support him through private school. The boy, however, constantly bullied in school by the wealthy kids, is not an exceptional student. He tries to follow the values imparted by his father- that though they are poor, they do not lie, steal, or crave what isn't theirs. He saves an enormous overweight girl from bullying one day, and earns her admiration and adoration, to his future usage. In the meantime, father and son pass time by entertaining themselves killing roaches in their improvished apartment. Mr. Chow, the father, can barely afford food on the table, let alone luxuries like shoes or electric fans, but one day his son (called Dicky in English) begged and cried for a CJ1, a toy that all his schoolmates have. Not being able to afford one, Mr. Chow goes to the dumpster to try to find something. He comes home with a rubbery ball and one day, the ball turned into a fuzzy cute dog-like space alien, which befriends Dicky.
